Description

Pharmaceutical company Merck reached an agreement with the works council on a restructuring plan for the company's operations in Germany, that would result in 1,100 job losses. The measure is part of Merck's "Fit for 2018" global business transformation programme.

Merck will cut around 1,100 of the 10,900 positions in Germany by the end of 2015. The plan will be implemented mainly through voluntary departures and early retirement programs across all divisions and functions. The company agreed to refrain from forced redundancies until the end of 2017, with the exception of site closures and transfers that are still under assessment.

The restructuring involves the closure of production plants in Lehrte, Lower Saxony, and Hohenbrunn, Bavaria. On the other hand, Merck plans to invest at other sites in Germany during the next two years.
