Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Parmalat, an agro-food company belonging to the Lactalis group, is to cut 120 jobs by the end of 2013. The restructuring plan, announced by the group, envisages the closure of the plants located at Genoa (63 job-losses), Como (9 job-cuts), Cilavegna, in the province of Pavia (around 20 job-cuts), and the reorganisation of the Collecchio plant (around 30 job-cuts). According to the company, the restructuring plan is needed in order to increase the productivity of Italian plants.
The trade unions have requested meetings with the management with the aim of analysing the details of the restructuring plan and finding adequate measures to reduce the negative effects for the redundant workers.
