Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Hewlett-Packard, an American multinational hardware and software corporation, is planning to cut 326 jobs in the Netherlands. This is part of a restructuring plan that envisages 8,000 redundancies across Europe (see here). Jobs are reported to be cut over the next 2.5 years.
Many redundancies will be implemented through voluntary redundancies and redeployment. Earlier, in 2009 and 2011, restructuring measures in the Netherlands resulted in the loss of 750 and 250 jobs respectively.
