Description

On 26 June 2012, railway operator Przewozy Regionalne announced plans to close the Silesian unit headquartered in Katowice. About 1,800 employees will lose their job by the end of 2012.

The main reason given for the unit's closure and dismissals is the lack of public financial support for the company from the Silesia Voivodeship, which at the beginning of 2012 decided not to prolong the contract with the company.

The redundant workers announced protests including the blockade of railways. The company and the voivodeship is to negotiate the conditions of the dismissals.

Przewozy Regionalne is owned and funded by 16 regional governments. The company provides local and interregional passenger transportation.
