Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 7 June, the French energy group Areva closed the site of its subsidiary Eurodiff (Site Georges-Besse I) as its technology employed to retreat uranium was reported to be outdated. As a result, 680 jobs will be lost.
Areva has invested a substantial amount of money in a new unit (Georges-Besse II) that will now take over the activity of the closed plant. Since the new site will only employ 450 employees (against 1,130 employees in Georges-Besse I), 680 employees will be cut over the next two years.
