Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 10 May 2012, the Commercial Court of Melun (Seine-et-Marne) decided the liquidation of Prevent Glass (employing 214 people), a company specialized in the manufacturing of flat glass for the car industry.
Trade unions denounce the responsibility of Volkswagen, the main customer of Prevent Glass, representing 75% of its turnover, after the company's decision to stop cooperation with the French supplier.
Prevent Glass was placed into receivership in November 2011. The Court, in response to the proposal by the Ministry of Industry, allowed pursuing the activities until April to give a new chance to find a buyer. Two investors from Hungary and Spain were contacted but eventually refused to take over the site. As there has been no other buyer for the plant, it is to be closed. The employees are to be dismissed by the end of May, but still hope that the site would be taken over by a company that could need their work.
