Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Alma Aluemedia, which is part of media group Alma Media, has announced redundancies of up to 135 full-time equivalents from its regional newspapers in Finland. The company has started mandatory negotiations with the employee representatives on the cuts.
Alma Aluemedia publishes several major as well as smaller regional and local newspapers. The company intends to increase collaboration between the papers. This would lead to a reduction of 135 full-time equivalents from the current 810 employees. The cuts can affect all regional and local papers and all other personnel groups except delivery personnel. The timeline of the restructuring is yet to be announced.
Updated, 12-06-2012: Alma has concluded negotiations and confirms redundancies of 98-103 full-time equivalents. Up to 44 employees will be dismissed, while another 59 will be cut by other means.
