Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Spanish construction company Los Serranos (owned by Eiffage) has applied for a redundancy procedure affecting 130 employees (37% of its workforce). The workers will receive a compensation for dismissal of 20 days per year worked. The rest of the workers will be subjected to a temporary dismissal of 180 days.
With this measure the group intends to reduce structural expenditures in order to compensate the economic losses recorded last year. The employee's representatives have called for a four-day strike action for 25 and 26 April and 3 and 4 May 2012 to protest against the company's decision.
