Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
German car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz (a division of the Daimler group) has applied for the redundancy procedure for its commercial division in Spain which will affect 110 out of its 760 staff. The plan also includes the closure of four out of 14 commercial centers. It is, however, not clear which locations will be affected or when the cuts will be implemented.
The plan presented to the unions envisages the loss of jobs through early retirement offers and voluntary redundancy, with compensation of 33 to 45 days per year. The restructuring is due to significant losses accumulated in 2009 and 2010.
