Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 2 December 2011, the Finnish maker of hygienic paper products Metsä Tissue announced plans to close down the production, converting and supply chain operation at the unit in Konstancin-Jeziorna (near Warsaw). The company is to implement the restructuring plan by the end of April 2012. Up to 140 workers will lose their jobs.
Lars Warvne, Senior Vice President Technology & Operations at Metsä Tissue, said the decision results from outdated infrastructure and declared that the company will develop the unit in Krapkowice.
Metsa Tissue has two factories in Poland, in Konstancin-Jeziorna and in Krapkowice (near Opole).
