Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Alcoholic beverage company Diageo, owner of the Guinness brand, has announced that its two breweries in Kilkenny and Dundalk in the Irish Republic will close by the end of 2013, with around 100 redundancies ensuing.
However, the drinks company plans to invest in a "brewing centre of excellence" at the main Guinness brewery in Dublin. The company announced its plans to centralize operations in Dublin in 2008, and has now confirmed that the Dundalk plant will shut down in July 2013 and the Kilkenny brewery in December 2013.
According to the Irish Times, the restructuring comes on the back of a review by Diageo of how it "can best ensure the long term sustainability" of its Irish brewing activities. The Guinness parent company has pointed out that the restructuring will provide 300 jobs during the time when the new central Dublin brewery is under construction.
