Description

On 30 January 2012, the steel company ArcelorMittal Poland announced plans to cut 1,000 jobs at the units in Chorzów, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Kraków, Sosnowiec, Świetochłowice by the end of 2012. The company plans to implement a voluntary dismissal programme and an early retirement programme. The redundant workers will receive a severance pay.

The job cuts are said to follow weakened demand for steel products.

The local trade unions are concerned that the level of redundancies could be higher than officially announced. They estimate that dismissals could affect up to 1,450 employees.

ArcelorMittal is a global steel company employing 280,000 people in 60 countries. The company has seven units in southern Poland and employs 12,300 people.
