Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 17 January 2012, Polish furniture producer Bydgoskie Fabryki Mebli announced plans to reduce its workforce by 180 people. The dismissals are expected to be implemented in June 2012.
The redundant workers will receive a severance pay equal to three months of wages. Currently, the company negotiates with the local trade unions which are against the plans of collective dismissals.
Andrzej Iwanow, president of the company, blamed the cuts on the drop in demand for furniture in the Polish market, which has been visible since 2009.
