Description

As reported on 17 January 2012, multinational lighting manufacturer Osram will cut about 850 jobs in Germany until 2014. This is due to a technological change towards LED technology and European legislation, which gradually prohibits classical light bulbs. Furthermore, Osram stated that price pressure from the Asian market leads to a need in cost reduction.

In total, Osram employs about 10,000 people in Germany. 400 of the announced cuts will take place in Berlin. However 200 of the affected employees will be taken over by Osram's mother company Siemens and nearly 150 of them have already accepted other voluntary measures to leave the company.

Osram employs 41,000 people worldwide. Job cuts outside Germany are expected, but as of now concrete numbers are still unknown.

Osram announced that negotiations with working representatives and unions are to start soon.
