Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Fincantieri, an Italy-based shipbuilding group, is to cut 140 jobs at the shipyard of Palermo, which employs around 550 workers. The Fiom-Cgil - the most represented trade union in the shipyard - reacted to the company's decision by announcing a strike.
At the national level, Fincantieri, Fiom-Cisl and Uilm-Uil (but not the Fiom-Cgil) reached an agreement on the 2012-13 industrial plan on December, 22nd. The agreement envisages the recourse to the Wage Guarantee Fund Schemes (on rotation basis) for around 3,600 workers (out of 8,200) in the next two years, new investments and a work reorganisation at the Fincantieri shipyards.
