Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 15 September, Sikorsky Aircraft announced to reduce its worldwide workforce of 18,000 by about 540 jobs. The cuts were reported to be necessary in order to remain competitive in the helicopter design, manufacturing and service industry.
Sikorsky (United Technologies Corp) will cut about 3 percent of its workforce but the company is not disclosing a breakdown of where the job cuts will be. The management said the company does not yet know how many layoffs will be necessary until it is clear how many of the eligible unionized workers in Connecticut (9,000 employees) accept a voluntary departure package. Employees in the US and Poland were informed about the planned redundancies.
The company has to make face to decreasing growth in U.S. and international economies and their impact on its commercial and military customers. Sikorsky has manufacturing and assembly plants in the USA, Poland, Turkey and China. It has a presence in other states and countries as well.
