European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
Whirlpool, American multinational manufacturer of home appliances, is to cut around 1,000 jobs in Italy. The job losses will particularly affect the Whirlpool's plants located at Cassinetta di Biandronno, in the province of Varese (around 600 job-cuts), Napoli (180 job cuts); Siena (120 job cuts) and Trento (50-100 job cuts).
This decision follows the global reorganization plan that the company announced at the beginning of November. According to the company the reorganization plan and costs' reductions are needed in order to cope with the fall in sales, increasing inflation, and the negative effects on the home appliances market caused by the recent economic crisis.
The trade unions reacted to the company's decision by declaring a strike and blockading the gates at the Cassinetta di Biandronno plant. The strikes demand a new industrial plan for the Italian industrial sites and the involvement of local and national authorities in order to ensure favorable conditions for new industrial investments.
Whirlpool Corporation is the world's largest manufacturer and distributor of domestic appliances, with more than 70 manufacturing and technology research centers around the world. The company has around 3,000 employees in Italy and the Whirlpool Europe division is headquartered at Comerio, in the province of Varese.
