Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The French manufacturer Chéreau, specialist in refrigerated transport trailers (550 employees), has announced to recruit 150 employees. The company has seen its turnover raised by 125 million Euros in 2011.
The company has a long history of restructuring: In December 2009 the company - a subsidiary of the German Trailer holding GmbH - was declared bankrupt. It was taken over by a new French owner who reduced its workforce in January 2010 by 114. Now, after the negative impact of the global financial crisis and one year of relatively low performance in 2010, the company's production is rising again: The number of trailers built is 12 per day now. It was 8 at the bottom of the crisis. The manager expects more orders in the next two to three years coming from customers who had delayed their renewal of their trailers fleet.
