Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 10 April 2011 the pet food manufacturer Continentale Nutrition announced that it will cut its workforce by 121 until 2012. Around 99 employees will be made redundant with the closure of the plant in Vedène (Bouches-du-Rhône) and 22 jobs will be cut at its headquarters in Boulogne-sur-Mer (Pas-de-Calais).
The plant received high levels of investment in the 1990s in order to support the growth of the company in southern Europe and its "wet pet food" market. However, it is said that this segment is now losing ground to the segment of dry pet food.
