Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 10 September 2011, lighting equipment producer Philips Lighting announced plans to close one of two factories in Pabianice and dismiss 250 workers. For economic reasons the company decided to relocate production to China. Philips has started negotiation with the local trade unions on the conditions of the collective dismissals (i.e. financial compensation for redundant workers). The company also offers job-finding support to affected workers.
