Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
At the beginning of July 2011 Irisbus announced the loss of 680 jobs due to the closure of its plant located at Valle Ufita (in the province of Avellino).
Irisbus is a manufacturer of urban and extra-urban buses belonging to the Iveco-Fiat group.
According to the company the closure is due to the drop in orders following the economic crisis. After the involvement of the Ministry of Economic Development, at the end of July a car-maker expressed interest in investing new resources in the industrial site of Valle Ufita. On 13 September the entrepreneur has renounced to invest in the Valle Ufita industrial area. Consequently in the next months Irisbus should start the procedures of closure and collective dismissals.
