Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 31st August, UPM-Kymmene announced its plans to reduce the annual production capacity around 2 percent, which will result in a loss of 1,300 jobs. The company is the world's biggest magazine paper maker by volume and it employs a total workforce of 24,500. The restructuring will take place in capacities in Finland, France and Germany. The company decided to close down two plants, Kouvoula (Finland) and Albbruck (Germany), that both together employ 932 workers. The site of Stracel (France), which has in total 262 employees, will be sold in the next 12 months. In addition, a paper production facility in Germany is planned to be closed down as well.
