Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Volvo Cars Cooperation has recently experienced a period of strong growth and will recruit about 1,000 new jobs in Gothenburg and another 200 in Gent. Most of the new jobs (about 900) will be for engineers in research and development. The company intends to expand its operations to enable the development of highly competitive and fuel efficient products and technologies. In particular, Volvo is seeking to build expertise in electric cars. According to the company, the recruitment is among the largest in the history of Volvo.
However, on 25 August 2011 Volvo representatives announced that the company is struggling to recruit the 1000 engineers due to housing shortage in Gothenburg. Only 400 of 1000 engineers are expected to have been recruted by the end of 2011.
