Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
About two hundred workers are to be made redundant over a phsed fifteen month period at Trallee-based textile plant, Burlington. The textiles plant employs 900 workers, but this will drop to about 700 following a rationalisation programme. However, Burlington has promised to spend £1.5million on the Tralee plant to provide new equipment "to make the operations more competitive". The Tralee cutbacks announced by Burlington are part of a rationalisation programme designed to "improve productivity and reduce the unit cost of the fabrics it manufactures".
