Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Piaggio Aero Industries, a leading company in aeronautic sector, is to cut up to 162 jobs in its plants located in Genoa Sestri Ponente and Finale Ligure, in the Liguria region. The job cuts are included in the 2010-13 industrial plan that the company announced few days ago. In the Finale Ligure plant there are 210 workers, while in the Genoa plant the workers are around 450.
The company has announced economic incentives for voluntary dismissals and the recourse to various social shock absorber measures in order to reduce the negative effects of the layoffs. The trade unions reacted to the company's decision by going on strike for a day and announcing other protest actions.
Piaggio Aero Industries operates in design, construction and maintenance of both aircraft and aircraft engines. In Italy it has around 1,400 employees.
