Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Suominen Joustopakkaukset, manufacturer of flexible packaging materials, announced 102 job cuts resulting from the closure of its plant in Nastola and the reorganisation of its Tampere plant.
The company has concluded mandatory negotiations with employee representatives; the need to improve its profitability is cited as the reason for the lay-offs, Nastola plant will be closed and its production will be transferred to a plant in Ikaalinen, Finland and a plant in Poland, Tampere plant will be reorganized.
Announcement of negotiations in September triggered a walk-out by the company's employees in Tampere. A representative for clerical employees regarded anticipated lay-offs as unnecessary.
