Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On the 22 October 2010, the Merkur Group announced a mass redundancy plan affecting 1,080 jobs out of total workforce of 4,800. The Merkur Group is wholesaler and retailer of technical products for domestic and industrial applications. It is the Slovenian market leader in sales of home products and DIY, electro-installation materials, apparatuses and appliances, machinery and tools, ferrous and non-ferrous metal products, and industrial items for professional use. The company is headquartered in Kranj in the Gorenjska region with shopping centres and shops all around Slovenia and in South Eastern European countries. Merkur has had finincial troubles due to reduced orders as a result of the economic downturn and also increased debts which are a result of the management buy-out.
