Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Finnish paper and paperboard manufacturer M-Real reduces up to 70 workers from its Simpele mill in south-eastern Finland.
The company has decided to close the paper machine at the Simpele plant, and it has concluded mandatory negotiations with its employees. The company attributes the decision to overcapacity in specialty papers, which it will continue to produce in Gohrsmühle, Germany. Folding boxboard is also produced at the Simpele plant and this production will be expanded by summer of 2011. Company is exploring other employment oppurtinities for workers who will be laid off. The local union has announced its opposition to any dismissals.
