Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Blackpool Council has announced plans to cut between 800 and 1,000 jobs as a result of the government's spending review. According to the Council leader, compulsory redundancies are 'inevitable' and the Council has already started negotiations with the trade unions. Unions are negotiating over other measures inlcuding pay freezes in an attempt to reduce the number of redundancies.
On 28 January 2011 the Council announced the specific number of redundancies. A total of 750 employees will be made redundant. The first round of redundancies will be in March 2011 when 200 temporary staff will go. The Council aniticipates 400 compulsory redundancies and reduction of 150 posts by not filling them.
