Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Sappi, a paper manufacturer based in Lanaken (Flanders), announced on 19 October its restructuring plan involving 65 jobs cuts. As of October 2010, direct dismissals are ruled out. Trade unions fear that 125 jobs may be lost over the next 5 years. Last year and for the first time since 2004, the site in Lanaken faced a loss of profit of about 10 million euro and the situation may not change in 2010. A meeting between trade unions and the management will take place on 2 November.
