Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
IT firm Hewlett-Packard has annouced that it is to cut 1300 jobs across the UK as part of its move towards automated data centres. The company currently employs 16,000 workers in the UK, but has cut its UK operation by 6000 jobs since 2008 according to the Public and Commercial Se vices Union (PCS). The company is expected to begin a 90 day consultation period at the end of October. No date was given for when the job losses would be implemented.
