Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Lite-on announced the closure of the production site in Győr, Hungary and to dismiss 450 employees. The collective redundancy and the closure of the company was already predicted in February 2010, when the Vasas Trade Union initiated immediately negotiation with the management, but also with other electronics companies in the region to find workplaces for the employees (mainly at Nokia and Sokoro).
Hans-Martin Maier, the managing director of the company says: for 5 years the Lite-on employed 5.500 employees, today 450 employees remained. There were always better and worst periodes in the production at Lite-on. Now thes are looking for flexible solutions. The Austrian Melecs GmbH (Please, see other fact sheet on Melecs) will employ 200 of Lite-on employees and rent a third of the company's establishments.
