Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 15th June, the management of Goss International announced its intention to reduce its workforce by 240 and to shut two of the company's sites. Prior to this announcement, a court ruled against a social plan to cut 120 jobs. Management had sought to obtain agreement from the works council to reduce the workforce via voluntary redundancies. On 16th September the company's management announced to the works council that it intends to make 329 posts redundant and to create a further 18.
Update: On December 21st, 2010 the company announced that the agreement with the works council includes approximately 300 redundancies.
