Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 24 August 2010, Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC), a state railway administration organisation, announced a massive workforce reduction of about 950 workers out of a total 9,600 by the end of 2010. The job cuts are part of a cost saving programme approved by the government. According to trade union representative Jaroslav Pejša, such large scale dismissals may result in social conflicts and could threaten the safety of railway transport.
On 19 November 2010, the company announced that it will lay off a further 1,000 employees in 2011. Workforce reduction will affect especially employees in administration. Trade union leaders criticise the restructuring plan and say that it is not effective.
