Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 20 July, the oil company ExxonMobil announced a plan to cut 133 jobs at the chemical division of its site in Port-Jérôme which currently has 2400 employees, including 1300 in the chemical division. The aim is to "restore profitability", said the management, and "save the business" by taking advantage of "high potential integration of the site" which has a refinery and a chemical platform. This restructuring will be accompanied by a social plan (plan de sauvegarde de l'emploi -PSE), focusing on internal reclassification and incentives to leave the company.
