On 2 June 2010 the Sony Corporation announced the closure of the Sony Blue-ray Disc player and DVD writer Factory in Gödöllő, Hungary. After 14 years of production the company has decided to close the factory as part of its global restructuring programme, and will outsource the activity to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from December 2010.
A day after the announcement the company started consulting trade unions and local authorities about the social plan and retraining programs. Despite the factory closure, Sony are to retain their Central and Eastern European commercial base in Hungary at the Sony Hungária Kft.
