Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The management of Godiva Belgium, a Brussels-based chocolate manufacturer, announced during a works council on 2nd March its intention to outsource packaging activities, involving 90 job losses (360 people work for Godiva Belgium). Another Belgian company based in Antwerpen (Flanders) already takes care of the packaging of a part of the production of Godiva. According to the management, retaining this activity inside Godiva is no longer profitable. During the days following the announcement, trade unions and workers' strikes blocked the entry of the manufacture and for its part, the management organised a lock-out on Wednesday 7th April. The Minister for employment asked the company to reconsider the restructuring plan.
