Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Franco-US telecom equipment provider Alcatel-Lucent announced plans to cut 814 French jobs throughout 2009 and 2010. Administrative and sales positions are believed to be form the greatest share of the cuts, with some industrial positions also affected.
The cuts come as part of a massive global €750 million cost-cutting plan. An initial announcement of 850 job losses was made in July 2009, only for this figure to be revised down to 814 in September. Unions were pretty angry at both announcements, launching into spontaneous strike action at affected sites.
