Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Independent supermarket Better Deals, in Strabane, Northern Ireland, is to cut more than 100 job losses when it ceases trading, expected to be by June 2010. It's owner blames competition from large supermarket chains, particularly the local Asda. Glyn Roberts of the Northern Ireland Independent Retail Trade Association said "There are over a dozen other out of town multiple applications right across Northern Ireland which pose a threat to numerous town centres and businesses like Better Deals who are unable to compete on such an unfair basis. We need urgent action by DOE Planning Service to reject these applications and prevent any further retail devastation of our town centres." The exact number of staff currently employed by the company, who will all lose their jobs, is not given.
