Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Huta CMC Zawiercie, the third largest steel producer in Poland, announced a collective dismissal programme affecting 120 employees. The programme has been designed in an agreement with company-level trade unions. 40 of the people to be laid off are acquiring retirement rights or pre-retirement benefits this year. In his announcement, the steelwork's president explained that the dismissals are a consequence of the economic crisis and a decline in steel production. The timeline for the dismissals is five months, until August 2010. It is not ruled out that the actual job reduction will be less if the financial condition of the steelworks improves quickly.
