Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 24 February 2010, Kuehne & Nagel, a provider of logistics solutions, announced its intention to close its distribution center in Ternat (Flanders) involving 270 job losses. The closure is due to the decision of the Carrefour Group to close 51 of its Belgian stores. Carrefour was the only client of the distribution center which delivered food to 57 Carrefour supermarkets.
According to Kuehne & Nagel management, the two others distribution centers in Nivelles (Wallonia) and Kontich (Flanders) are not threatened; the site based in Nivelles could even integrate about fifty workers coming from the Ternat centre.
