Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Kompania Weglowa, the largest coal mining company in Poland and Europe is to hire 630 people in 2010, and over 14,000 people in the next five years. Most of this year's new recruits (581) will be coal mining school graduates who have a guarantee of employment. Such guarantees are usually the result of contracts signed between companies and schools. The new recruits will replace some of those leaving the company's large workforce, with 3,800 people set to leave their jobs and over 2,500 due to retire.
On Tuesday 9 March 2010 the vice president of the company presented its employment strategy until 2015. Last year (in 2009) a hiring freeze was in place in Kopalnia Weglowa due to the negative effects of the economic crisis. This year (2010) hiring will be limited mostly to mining school graduates. A major recruitment drive, according to the strategy, will then start in 2011 when 3,300 people will be hired (including over 500 mining school graduates).
Over the next five years Kompania Weglowa plans to hire 14,300 people, 3,100 of whom will be mining school graduates. The company expects to see its staff numbers decline over this period with 25,000 people due to leave their jobs, 19,500 of whom will retire. Currently Kompania Weglowa employs approximately 63,500 people.
