Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The car part manufacturer Inoplast is to reduce its workforce in its Ardèche plant by 128 employees through voluntary departures in 2010. This is due to a drop in orders by 50% in 2009. Management reached an agreement about the restructuring with all trade unions but one. From January 2010 onwards employees will be entitled to the statutory severance payments plus €19,000 if they leave the company voluntarily.
The company is a subsidiary of Plastic Omnium and employs about 1300 people. Inoplast had already reduced its workforce by 76 workers in the beginning of 2009.
