Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 19 January 2010, Wärtsila, a manufacturer of engines and screw propellers for ships, announced the loss of 570 out of 1,500 jobs in the Netherlands. 400 jobs will be lost in Drunen (Brabant) and the remainder in Zwolle (Overijssel) and Schiedam (Zuid Holland). The production will be offshored to China. In the past few years, Wärtsila had made significant investments in these plants.
