Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 23 January 2009, Electrolux Lehel announced the reduction of 110 jobs at its Nyíregyháza plant by the end of August 2009. This is due to the contraction of the household appliance market in the current economic climate.
After consultation with employees the company agreed to decrease the number of direct dismissals from 110 to 95. This was, however, only made possible because the company decided not to renew 15 fixed-term contracts due to an increase in productivity.
The Nyíregyháza plant produced 900,000 freezers last year. It is owned by the Swedish household appliance manufacturer Electrolux.
