Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
State-owned rail freight company CFR Marfă has announced that it is to dismiss 6,380 employees between February and March 2010. The company has already notified the collective dismissals to the employment office. The restructuring is due to the economic difficulties of the company. With a total workforce of 17,000 employees, CFR Marfa controls 76% of the total volume of goods transported by railway in Romania.
The trade unions are opposed to the move, not least because the collective agreement does not provide for compensations in the event of layoffs. If the government does not allocate a sum for these payments, the workers will be made redundant without being paid.
