Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Debrecen-based furniture manufacturer Sellaton Hajlítottbútor Gyár had planned to dismiss only 50 workers from its 149 strong headcount but later the liquidation process forced the company to lay-off the entire workforce and to close the 102 year- old plant. Since the 1990s the company had been one of the main suppliers to the public administration; this ended when in the latest public procurement the contract was won by another firm. The other reason for the closure was the gradual loss of its foreign markets (in Europe and the US). There is no information available whether the public procurement winner company will employ any of the dismissed workers.
