Description

In 2009, Ireland's state postal company An Post announced 1,300 redundancies over three years in a cost-cutting plan commenced in January 2010. The company subsequently revised the planned maximum redundancies to 2000 by the end of 2015.

The first phase of the restructuring plan will see 250 headquarters workers in Dublin take voluntary redundancy from January 2010. An Post has said that it has no choice but to seek to slash costs and jobs prior to the full liberalisation of the postal market due to start in 2011. According to the company, a 10 per cent drop in postal volumes in 2009 has also contributed to An Post's worsening financial situation. In total, up to 2,000 staff from an overall workforce of 10,000 could leave under the plan.
