Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Irish-owned food manufacturer Glanbia has announced 65 redundancies at its facilities at Ballyragget, Co. Kilkenny and Virginia, Co. Cavan, as well as introducing 'new flexible working arrangements' at the plants. In view of what it calls its current loss making position, Glanbia undertook 'a strategic review with the twin objectives of sustaining our competitive position and to take advantage of commercial opportunities as they arise', according to the CEO of Glanbia Ingredients.
'We need to address our competitiveness through both new flexible working arrangements and approximately 65 redundancies of which 55 will be related to the Ballyragget business. We are consulting with the employee representatives of the details of this plan which is designed to secure the remaining 500 jobs in the business', the company added.
