Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
US computer multinational Hewlett-Packard (HP) will be cutting 220 jobs in Barcelona through voluntary redundancies as a result of its acquisition of Electronic Data Systems (EDS). Those who wish to leave the company voluntarily will be offered compensation of 58 days per year worked, according to union sources. When HP announced its purchase of EDS in 2008, the multinational estimated that it would have to lay off 24,000 around the world, of which 9,300 would be in Europe. EDS has 2,000 employees in Spain.
